What is teak?

Teak is a kind of wood. Its origins come from the rainforest. Teak wood comes from the teak tree, a tree of the Lamiaceae family. We can find it in some Asian countries such as Burma, Thailand and Indonesia.

Teak tends to be more expensive than other kinds of wood for so many reasons. A part from its hardness and extraordinary durability, teak is one of the most beautiful and elegant that exist, hence its price and value.

A table or a chair made of high quality teak can resist decades outdoors. Its durability is far superior to pine or oak.

In Marine Business we have created a chairs and tables collection for your boat, made of grade A teak from Indonesia.

The reason we have chosen Indonesian teak to make our nautical furniture is that this country has an organization especially focused on the management of this precious natural resource.

The government has official teak tree plantations, where only a certain number of trees can be felled each year, and each tree is replaced by planting a new tree on the same site.

For this reason, you have to be careful when buying teak, as it not always comes from this so called ‘legal forests’, where government permits for logging do exist. We have been very careful about it and our teak has the seal of quality and origin, meaning it passes all Indonesian and EU legality checks.

Handmade production

All the pieces are handmade by carpenters who are experts in furniture of these characteristics, and have undergone a process of polishing and varnishing under the strictest quality controls.

Teak tables

You can choose between two sizes: the 80 x 60 table and the 120 x 80 table, which you can close and leave it in 120 x 40. The latter also has two heights for use as a coffee table or dining table.

Both models are foldable to save space or to store them indoors during the winter months.

Teak armchairs and stools

As seating you can choose chairs or stools.

We have designed the chairs as the classic director’s chairs, but we have opted for high quality finishes in each of the pieces. The stools are designed to take up as little space as possible and have extra seating for guests or special cases.

Both models are foldable to take up as little stowage space as possible on the boat.

Colours

You can choose your ship’s director chairs in classic navy blue, ecru or bold turquoise. The same goes for the stools.

Maintenance of nautical teak tables and chairs

All pieces of furniture are made for use on the exteriors of boats, as teak wood contains natural oils that give it extraordinary properties to resist moisture. These oils protect the furniture against dry rot, fungi and pests.

To make our nautical furniture even more durable than the strictly natural wood, we have varnished it with a special colourless oil that is resistant to saltpetre and outdoor humidity. This way, as it is transparent, we highlight the natural golden colour of the teak.

The result: extraordinary pieces with a 100% natural look.

But just like teak floors on boats, the furniture needs maintenance after a few years, when the golden colour fades and turns grey.

In the case of our nautical chairs and tables, being high quality teak, all you need to do is sand and apply a thin coat of colourless outdoor oil and they will look as good as new again.

Although teak is weather-resistant, if we want to extend the life of the original varnish, we recommend storing the chairs and tables inside the boat during the winter months, to delay as much as possible the wear of the varnish due to UV rays, humidity and saltpetre.

The maintenance of outdoor furniture, especially those used on our yacht or sailboat, is essential. Teak oil is necessary for the care of this furniture and it will always look as good as new
